Travelling to Venice

Venice attracts hundreds of thousands of travellers to this magical city every year. With a mild climate and dozens of must-see attractions, Venice is a popular holiday destination for visitors from all over the world.

Summers in Venice are humid and hot, with average daytime temperatures reaching upwards of 20°C. Unfortunately, there is significant pollution and even more heat coming in from the south, thanks to the Sirocco winds. Brief thunderstorms are common in late afternoon, but significant rain doesn’t fall until the winter. In fact, flooding occurs frequently in November and December. January and February are the coldest months with temperatures ranging from near zero to around 7°C. Spring is cool and clear, with frequent rain all the way into June.

Most visitors book flights to Venice between April and October, especially between Easter and June and again from September to October. Christmas, New Year and February’s Carnevale celebrations are also busy times. Reservations made well in advance are advisable if you plan to travel during these months, though rates and flights to Venice can be considerably more expensive than at other times of year. The best weather is in the early spring months and again in September, but crowds start to thin in October. This may be the ideal time to visit if you don’t mind lots of tourists.

Heavy rains, in the autumn, cause flooding, so getting around the city on foot can be difficult. Snow and colder temperatures in the winter keep many visitors away, but at these times hotel rates and flights to Venice are at their cheapest.
