Travelling to Russia has never been easier and with a range of cheap flights to Moscow and other main cities, it may be cheaper than you think. Once you’ve landed at Moscow Airport you will want to explore this fantastic city and the best way to see it is on public transport.
With buses, trams, taxis and the Moscow Metro, getting around this city couldn’t be easier. Public transport is the best way to view this large city, as some of the sights and attractions are out of the centre of Moscow.
The Moscow Metro runs from 5.20am until 1am. Although the signs do not include an English translation, using the Metro is very simple. All the routes are colour coded similar to the London Underground system. Travellers may be surprised to find the Metro stations decorated and painted with murals. This is because in the beginning it was going to be an underground shelter in case of war, so artwork and sculptures were chosen that would endorse the communist way of life and be agreeable to the eye. It would be wise to avoid the Metro during rush hour as it can become overcrowded.
Moscow also runs bus, tram and trolley services, which although very cheap to use can be rather unreliable. With no night time service, if the last connection is missed the only other option is a taxi. There is also a minibus shuttle called the Marshrutka that travels on the same routes as the buses. These minibuses are also easy to use.
Taxis are a convenient way to travel around Moscow, and any car, even privately owned ones, can be flagged down as a ‘taxi’ for a price. This will be a strange concept to the foreigner but is normal practice in Moscow. Making sure a price is agreed before travelling is a good idea. Asking a friendly local for an estimated fare price beforehand will stand you in good stead for bartering.
