Travel guides – South America

In order of size, South America is mainly comprised of Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile and Ecuador. Other countries within this vast region of almost 6.9 million square miles include Uruguay, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and a number of islands – the Galapagos Islands and Easter Island to the west, Robinson Crusoe Island (of the Chilean Juan Fernandez archipelago) and the Falkland Islands, off the south coast of Argentina. The most popular South American destinations include Rio de Janeiro (Brazil’s second largest city after Sao Paulo), Buenos Aires and Machu Picchu (final stop of backpacker’s mission the Inca Trail, and home of the incredible Lost City of the Incas).

Rich with ancient history, fascinating heritage, lush forests, awe-inspiring trekking opportunities and endless stunning vistas, this continent is the adventurous traveller’s dreams come true. South America is home to the Amazon rainforest, over a billion acres of natural habitat for hundreds of thousands of species, from butterflies, bugs and birds to snakes, sloths, apes and wild cats. Most of the Amazon rainforest is located in Brazil, with eco tour companies and conservation projects coordinating numerous expeditions throughout the year. Angel Falls, the world’s tallest waterfall, can be found in Venezuela. The famous Inca Trail is a 26-mile hike in Peru, and is just a small part of a 16,000-mile route which also passes through Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia and Argentina. Brazil is the location of the Rio Carnival, an annual street party which lasts for four exuberant days (Saturday to Tuesday) in late February or early March.

Active holiday-makers with a taste for the exotic and who appreciate the Latin spirit are well-advised to book a stay in one of South America’s colourful and eclectic countries. Whether you prefer a beach holiday at an established luxury resort or a back-to-basics adventure holiday off the beaten track, the South America experience will provide you with countless photo opportunities and a new lease of life.
