A travellers guide to Egypt

Egypt has a desert climate and the weather is generally divided into just two seasons. The summer runs from around June to September, when temperatures can reach 31°C on the coast and nearly 50°C inland, while winter runs from October to May and while temperatures are not as extreme, it is still warm.

The peak season for travellers on flights to Egypt is during the winter. In summer, temperatures can be unbearable, so most tourists stay away. During prime travel season, many Europeans visit Egypt to escape the cold of their home countries. Expect higher prices on accommodation during this time and plan ahead, as many hotels and resorts fill up quickly.

As the tourist off-season is during the summer, if you’re a true bargain hunter with a strong tolerance for oppressively high temperatures, you can find great deals on flights to Cairo at this time of year. One piece of advice, stay near the coast to avoid the worst of the heat. Another benefit of travelling to the country during off-peak times is the relative calm and quiet of many of the nation’s most popular tourist destinations. Things also slow down considerably during the month of Ramadan, when many restaurants close down and alcohol is mostly unavailable.

The best time to travel to Egypt is in March and April, when temperatures are mild and crowds are starting to thin out after peak season. During these months, you can still travel comfortably, find great deals, avoid throngs of fellow tourists and take the time to discover this enchanting nation.
